Happy Halloween!

Today is Halloween! Halloween seems to be an invitation for mischief. Once the youngsters have dwindled, along with your candy supply, move your pumpkins either indoors, into your garage, or even into the trash. Don’t leave them sitting on the front porch inviting the older children to smash them all over your yard and home. This goes for your decorative, un-carved pumpkins as well. It only takes a minute, and it will save you a lot of November first cleanup.

Food Shakers

Has a turtle ever outlived a shaker of turtle food?
~Jerry Seinfield~

Actually, the answer is yes.

Pet turtles live from 10-80 years while larger species can
easily live over 100. The oldest recorded age of a turtle is
250 years in India.

Turtles take it easy.

Perhaps we should take note.

H1 N1 Flu Precautions

We can never go over these too many times.

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and
Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He
has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital ,
Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our
Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak
Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a
lot of sense and is important for all to know
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and
mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost
impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all
precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as
proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any
symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation,
aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some
very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official
communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock
N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all
official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all
temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe
or slap).
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use
Listerine if you don't trust salt)... *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after
initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show
characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a
way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy
individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don't underestimate
this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least
once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at
Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal
cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both
nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective
in bringing down viral population.* Neti pots and sinus rinse kits are
available at the drug store and relatively inexpensive under $15.

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are
rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to
supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to
boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc)
as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling,
but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from
the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or
do any harm.
I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list..
You never know who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because
of it...

Stop the unfair tax grab in Ontario

Dalton McGuinty’s new HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) will hurt thousands of Ontarians already paying more than their fair share of taxes.

A new tax on gas, hydro and everyday purchases like coffee and newspapers will make life even less affordable for middle-class and working Ontarians.

Ontarians don't need another unfair tax. We need to get Ontario's economy back on track with smart policies like "Buy Ontario" and targeted investments that create and sustain jobs.

Join thousands of Ontarians.
Tell Dalton McGuinty to stop this unfair tax.

The Next Big Site in Social Media..Don't Miss It!

First of all, put your wallet away. I want to share something with you that won't cost you a thing!

If you're paying attention, you have to have noticed how the social media websites are reshaping the internet. Twitter, FaceBook, and similar sites have changed how people interact and do business online. Even Google, the largest of the search engines, has had to respond because they noticed that people were doing their research, and monitoring breaking news, on Twitter. So, they restructured how they deliver results.

Twitter is the current "darling" of social media, with even mainstream personalities such as Larry King, and major networks such as CNN, making it a central part of their businesses. The next trend WILL BE a site called Sokule. It's a lot like Twitter, only it's designed to be friendly to marketers. This is what's going to make it take off as marketers, and large corporations flock to it.

You should check out Sokule, and grab your free account now at: http://tinyurl.com/ykjh32q

My friend Willie Crawford recently interviewed the founders of Sokule, and you can download the PDF transcript of that interview. A direct download link, where you don't have to fill out any type of form, or anything ..just e-mail me info@perkpromo.net That's it for today.

Go ahead and get registered now. This is the next big trend in social networking, and as I said, it has the potential to easily overshadow Twitter. I'll see you there :-)

Boy Decides Who Will Have Custody

A seven-year-old Toronto, Ontario boy was at the center of a Toronto city courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should
have custody of him.

The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents & the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law & regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents & he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy alleged they had also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family & learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references & confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Toronto Maple Leafs, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

An act of self protection
Perhaps a friend has betrayed you, an investment has gone bad, or a neighbor is driving you crazy. Or maybe you feel that your family is not giving you the support you deserve or that your children are not turning out as you had planned. “Poor me,” you sigh, and soon your frustration boils over into anger and you're thinking about revenge. Deep down, you know you can't change what has happened, yet you hold onto these experiences for dear life, allowing them to bother your every waking and sleeping moment. Why?
Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.

Hanging onto resentment is letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head.

Bruno's comment
Letting go is a pure act of self-protection. The angrier we become, the more urgent it is for us to let go. If we can't let go of our anger, our frustration, and especially our lust for revenge, we will eventually hurt ourselves. Letting go means that we stop blaming others or even ourselves. It allows us to learn from the lesson our experience has taught us - and only then can we move on to a new task, a new experience, a new life.
Are you gnashing your teeth about something that happened to you? Protect yourself and think about letting go.

Daddy, How was I born?

A little boy asks his father, "Daddy, how was I born?"

The father answers, "Well, son, I guess one day you will need
to find out anyway! Your Mom and I first got together in a chat
room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mom and
we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, and
googled each other. There your mother agreed to a download from
my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered
that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too
late to hit the delete button, nine months later a little Pop-Up

You've Got Male!

Just leave it up to Google to come up with something like this!!!

Here's a number worth putting in your cell phone, or your home phone speed

dial: 1-800-goog411 or 1-800-466-4411.

This is an awesome service from Google, and it's free -- great when you are on the road. Don't waste your money on information calls and don't waste your time manually dialing the number.

I am driving along in my car and I need to call the golf course and I don't know the number. I hit the speed dial for information that I have programmed (1-800-goog411). The voice at the other end says, "Say the name of the business and the City & Province or State." I say, "Firewheel Golf Course, Garland , Texas”. It says, "Connecting" and Firewheel answered the phone.

How great is that? This is nationwide, Canada & US, and it is absolutely free! Works on cell and landline phones.

Very Inspiring - Pay Attention!

As we get older we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world.

It is at these times that our hopes are boosted by the remarkable achievements of other "seniors" who have found the courage to take on challenges that would make many of us wither.

Harold Sclumberg is such a person (read on)

I've often been asked, 'What do you old folks do now that you're retired? Well..I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background, and one of the things I enjoy most is turning beer, wine, Scotch, and margaritas into urine.

Happy Thanksgiving

Take Some Risks Senior Citizens

There is a classic image of a senior citizen driving with their turn signals continuously on and poking along 20 miles under the speed limit on the highway. A popular comedian once quipped that if he was 80 years old, he would “drive like hell” since, after all, why not take some risks at 80?

It’s true that as we move into our senior years, we do become a bit cautious in how we conduct our affairs. Now, if you have health difficulties that a fall or a serious illness could prove life threatening, those precautions are called for. In defiance of that comedian’s remarks, our lives are precious and just because we are closer to the final years of our lives doesn’t mean we want to see our lives end too soon and miss out of a minute of this time on earth and time with our children and grandchildren.

But one aspect of that joke has some food for thought as we think about our lifestyle as senior citizens. There may be some good reasons to get out there and take some risks in life and to enjoy the thrill that a little danger can bring. Recently the elder President George Bush went skydiving even though he was well into his senior years. His life of achievement showed that President Bush was not afraid of a challenge. And by getting out there and doing something fun and that may have been a dream of his, he showed that our senior years are not all about rocking chairs and naps. It’s also a time to live out our dreams.

Some risks, like skydiving, can be done with the guidance of skilled professionals to help reduce the actual dangers. But the illustration of what President Bush did emphasizes one rational for to “go for it” and take some risks in our retirement years. For one thing, it’s a tremendous inspiration to younger people when they see their elders exhibiting courage and a willingness to get out of their comfort zone. Many times your own children may be the ones who need that kind of inspiration that they too should live life courageously and not let fear stop them from enjoying every moment.

Another great reason to take a risk is that it may be a great way to bond with family. Not long ago, I had the chance to go white water rafting with my grandson. Now I am not an adventurer and not in physical shape to do anything athletic. But this was a moment where I could establish a bond with my grandson by going into a great adventure with him and coming out of it with great stories. Because I am writing this article for you shows that I made it. There were a few heart stopping moments but I wouldn’t trade those moments with him for the world. You too may be presented with a chance to make a memory with a loved one by taking a risk. And it’s worth going for it, in a reasonable fashion, to capture that memory and build that bond as well.

Some risks you might take don’t involve physical danger. Maybe you need to finally take the plunge and get up at the local open mic night and deliver that stand up comedy routine you have been polishing up with the family. They say there is nothing more terrifying as facing a crowd and trying to make them laugh. But when you hear their laughter and their applause, that will be a dream come true for the amateur comic in you.

So consider taking a few risks as you plan your activities in your busy retirement schedule. The rush of adrenaline will put some spring in your step and give your heart rate a workout. But it will also add some fun and adventure to your life. And that is something we all can use.

Procrastination

The Problem: Procrastination. (Yes, we all do it.).

The Secret: Doing the project isn't the real challenge, it's getting started in the first place.

The Trick: A "dash" is a quick burst of effort on whatever you're
avoiding. The idea is to start small enough that you'll actually do it. It's ok if the amount of effort feels
"ridiculously small", especially if you're really stuck.

Example: "I'm going to clean this room for one minute" or "I'm going
to open the project and write one sentence."

How it works: The longer you avoid doing something the bigger
it gets inside your mind. ANY progress that gets you started wipes
away that feeling and gives you a fresh start. From there it's
easier to keep moving.

I hope this is helpful.

Windmill Blades – Make them or Buy Them?

So you’ve decided to build your own windmill. Possibly you took the right steps and purchased one of the top guides that teach the subject. Or maybe you’re more daring and trying to do it without professionally written instruction. In either case one area where many people get stuck is when it comes time to create their windmill blades. Really when you get to this step you have two separate options: 1. Build them yourself – Obviously this is the least expensive route 2. Buy Premade Windmill Blades – Costs more but is a lot less work From that I wanted to take some time to talk about the advantages/disadvantages of going either way. In reality if you put a value to your time, by the time you finish building the wind turbine blades yourself, the cost is close to equal. On the other hand, if you’re cheap like me, it might be that you’d rather do it yourself and save the money. In either case there are advantages to going either way. Buying Your Windmill Blades First let’s cover the advantages of buying your blades. In this case they are really quite obvious. 1. The blades are professionally made 2. More varieties of materials you can buy your blades in 3. Less concern about getting the correct shape to catch the wind. Of course there are also disadvantages to buying windmill blades instead of making them yourself. First, it becomes more difficult to tailor your blades to the generator you selected/created for your DIY windmill. And then, of course, there is the cost involved. Machined blades can run you as much as $1,000 or more. To offset that cost, you may want to check eBay. Often you can find premade blades there, in diameters of 4’ to 6’, for around $100. Making Your Own Windmill Blades While there are advantages to buying your windmill blades, there are also some big advantages to building them yourself. 1. The blades are created with your actual windmill design in mind. 2. You save your money, and your home power system will cost less. 3. You get to choose the style of turbine blade to fit your area. Especially in low wind speed areas, this is important. 4. You get the satisfaction of telling everyone – you did it! If you do choose to build your own windmill blades, I suggest you take the time to learn about the top three wind power conversion guides. With our top pick specifically, they recently added a video that teaches that exact topic. In any case, be sure to take the time to design your blades to fit your application. Taking the time to do so will ensure your wind mill operates trouble-free for years to come! http://tinyurl.com/yeg62mj

1 bulb at a time..

A physics teacher in high school, once told the students that while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn't slow a train very much, a billion of them would . With that thought in mind, read the following, obviously written by a good Canadian.
Good idea . . . one light bulb at a time . . . .

Check this out . I can verify this because I was in Lowe's the other day for some reason and just for the heck of it I was looking at the hose attachments . They were all made in China . The next day I was in Home Hardware and just for the heck of it I checked the hose attachments there. They were made in Canada. Start looking.

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job. So, after reading this email, I think this lady is on the right track . Let's get behind her!

My grandson likes Hershey's candy . I noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more . My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest .. You have to read the labels on everything .

This past weekend I was at Wal-mart . I needed 60W light bulbs . I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled, "Everyday Value. " I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this -in Canada in a company in Ontario.

So throw out the myth that you can not find products you use every day that are made right here .

My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in Canada - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying Canadian, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from overseas companies!

(We should have awakened a decade ago . . . . . . )

Let's get with the program . . . . help our fellow Canadians keep their jobs and create more jobs here in Canada.

2016 Olympics in Rio

Nearly 50,000 people erupted in celebration when Rio de Janeiro was announced host of the 2016 Olympics on Friday, jumping and cheering in a Carnival-like party on Copacabana beach.

A huge roar was heard at the famed beach the moment International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said the words "Rio de Janeiro" when announcing the winner in Copenhagen.

As popular President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and soccer great Pele celebrated in Denmark, the Cariocas, as Rio citizens are known, raised their arms to commemorate on Copacabana, frantically waving flags and hugging each other.

The party was expected to go on well into the night, and officials said the crowd would easily surpass 100,000 people.

The Cariocas danced to samba as confetti was launched into the air in front of a massive stage set up for the victory celebration.

A banner half the size of a soccer field - with Rio's logo, an image of the Christ the Redeemer statue and the words "Rio Loves You" - was displayed.

The Cariocas had been anxiously awaiting the result, taking advantage of a sunny day to watch the announcement on two big screens set up on the beach. Live concerts featuring popular artists had been entertaining the crowd since early in the morning, and the traditional Salgueiro samba group was on hand to keep the party going.

Rio beat Madrid, Chicago, and Tokyo, finally winning the bid after failed attempts in 1936, 2004 and 2012.

Here's what to look for in a Computer Printer

What Computer Printer Characteristics Should Be Considered

A typical computer should have a printer on hand. There are all sorts of computer printer characteristics to look into first. The type of printer that is used is one of the characteristics to consider. This includes the printing quality and the speed of the printing. Multiple services, including scanning and faxing, can take place from a printer too. Here is a look into these computer printer characteristics.

The type of the printer is one of the computer printer characteristics to follow. The dot matrix printer is still used in some places. This is where pixels are printed to form a single image. However, more advanced technologies are being used. For instance, the toner based printer uses static electricity to move the toner into the paper for printing and then heat is applied to keep it on the paper.

The inkjet printer is the most common printer on the market today. This is where small bits of ink are printed onto a piece of paper. Each bit of ink will be attached via a small electric charge.

Laser printers are becoming popular too. These can work with toner in that the LEDs in the printer can get the toner to stick to the paper. Inkless printers are currently in development as well. Dye crystals are used to be heated into the area between the two layers of the paper. This is a process in development though, as the print has been known to fade quickly in trial tests.

The first of the computer printer characteristics to consider is that of the quality of the printing. The quality that a printer will be capable of handling will be measured by its dpi, or dots per inch. The dpi readout will be based on the ability of the printer to be able to print high quality images. For instance, a typical printer on the market will have a dpi readout of 600x600. This means that there will be 600 dots per inch on both the vertical and horizontal parts of the page. 4800x1200 is becoming a standard on some of the higher end printers these days, and some will even go as high as 9600x2400 in quality.

The speed of the printer is another of the computer printer characteristics that is important. The number of pages per minute that it will be able to print measures the speed. This speed will be different based on whether or not black and white pages or color pages are going to be printed. Some printers can handle up to thirty black and white pages in a minute and eight color pages in a minute, for instance.

The multiple features on a printer are the last of the computer printer characteristics to look into. Some printers are able to handle scanning or fax technologies. Some will also be able to copy pages right from the printer without a connection to anything. CD and DVD label printing is also featured on some of these newer printers.

Those are the computer printer characteristics to think about when buying a new printer. The type of printer, its quality output and the speed of the printer are all important. Additional services may be considered too. By using these considerations, it will be easier to find a printer that is right for one’s specific needs.
